Life in Ghana

I have to admit, Russ and I were so excited about going to Ghana and learning of their culture, that we fell in love with everything.  That doesn't necessarily mean that I'm ready to give up my washer and dryer, but there certainly are a lot of things that I could go without!
 Washing the laundry.
They even have Chuck E Cheese!
Building and construction is very interesting.  They don't take out loans, so they build in phases as they save their money. There were many buildings that were sitting and waiting for the next phase.
They use bamboo sticks for forms and braces during construction.
When you are thirsty, they climb a coconut tree, grab a coconut, and slide down.

A few whacks with a machete, add a straw and you have a refreshing drink.
This is one of very few gardens in Accra.  Land is very expensive.  They don't have yards, gardens or parks to play at.
Weaving baskets just like the ones you can buy at Michael's.
Driving is crazy, but exciting.  A little beep of the horn lets everyone know you are there and want to get by or through or past.  Horns are honking all the time, but no one is upset.
And if you are stuck in traffic, no worries.  You can buy pretty much anything from the sellers walking down the middle of the street.
And the sidewalks are lined with peoples' stands, everyone selling something.  This is the entrance of Makola Market, the largest market in Accra.  It is like the wholesale shop!!!!
I love that the children even carry the babies on their backs.
Russ learned how to pound fufu.

And then we ate the fufu.  Way better than what we served at our fundraiser!

We fell in love with the Ghanaian lifestyle and culture.

  1. Love it! I'm so happy you got to see the fun parts of Ghana. One of my favorite things is that people here are so polite. I've even heard on more than one ocassion, "No, please." They even ask, it it's ok to leave your house. The first time our friend Michael did this, I thought he was trying to ask me to go with him. :)
