We left Great Falls on November 24, 2012 at 5:10 AM. We were super excited to be on our way. Somehow, when we booked our seats next to each other, we ended up across the aisle from each other. And the guys sitting on either side of us were not nearly as excited. They closed the windows and slept the whole way to Minneapolis. Boring!
Once we arrived in Minneapolis, we had a six hour lay-over. The Minneapolis Airport is one big circle and we walked it twice....about three miles. We figured we needed some exercise before we flew over the ocean.
This is the plane that we flew on to Amsterdam. We flew through the night and tried to rest. We left at 3:15 pm in Minneapolis and arrived at 6:35 am in Amsterdam. We found some lounge chairs in the Amsterdam Airport and took a good nap.
When we woke up, these guys were at a table near us. A few of the Harlem Globe Trotters.........trotting around the globe!
We had another six hour layover. The Amsterdam Airport isn't nearly as exciting as the Minneapolis Airport. And even though we hadn't gone out of the airport, we had to pass through security again with our carry-ons. Then we sat and waited for an hour before the boarded us on the largest airplane we've ever flown on.
We think we saw Paris, or some other large city, and we flew over an island, and then we saw the coast of Africa. We flew over the Sahara Desert. It was amazing. Obviously we didn't get a great picture sitting inside the airplane! We landed in Accra, Ghana at 7:55 pm (Ghana time and 2:55 am Great Falls time.) It took us a total of 48 hours from the time we entered the Great Falls Airport to the time we left the Accra Airport. We rested well that night.
Our return trip was not nearly as exciting. Well, we weren't as excited. We left Accra at 10:00 pm December 4. We flew over the ocean and landed in NY at JFK at 4:00 am. We had a four hour layover. Russ and our friend, Aaron, weren't feeling well at all and laid on the floor. We left NY at 8:15 and flew to Chicago. We had a five hour layover in Chicago. We tried to find Chicago style pizza, but we couldn't find any in the airport. When we boarded the plane to Minneapolis, it was the tiniest plane we flew on the whole trip. Because some people had three or four carry ons, by the time we boarded, all the overhead compartments were full. So, they made me check my ONLY carry on. They tagged it and said it would go to Great Falls. I had a feeling it wasn't going to make it, so I took the one souvenir out of it and then let them check it. We had forty minutes in the Minneapolis airport, so we went directly to our gate after we landed and they were just starting to board. We met up with our friends Eldon Pfile and Andre Giles, who were flying home from business meetings. We landed in Great Falls at 7:30 pm and the children were waiting with open arms to meet us. Lots of hugs and kisses and jumping up and down. And you guessed it, my checked "carry on" didn't make it. It's lost somewhere and I'm so glad that I have the souvenir and only dirty laundry is missing!!!!
